"Health Coaches" Advance Wellness at HISD

Wellness efforts at HISD are getting a big boost, thanks to the more than 70 HISD teachers who are participating in the new “Health Coaches” program, part of the HKHS initiative. Beginning in February, these outstanding wellness champions will begin implementing a “blueprint” of wellness activities at their local schools.

During a recent workshop conducted at the Health/PE Winter Conference at Reagan High School, the new “Health Coaches” heard from various speakers and received support materials, including a “Blueprint” that provide easy-to-implement wellness activities, such as a pedometer contest for students and staff. Also highlighted was "Fuel Up to Play 60”, a free kit built around a fun wellness competition, available to all HISD schools.

“Just a year ago at the Healthy Kids Healthy Schools Summit, we brainstormed the concept for a ‘Health Coaches’ type program. It’s gratifying to see that idea come to life,” said Rose Haggerty, Manager, Secondary Health/Physical Education for HISD and co-chair of the HKHS initiative. “I’m grateful to my many HISD colleagues who have stepped forward to take advantage of these new tools. I know that, together, we can take wellness to an even higher level for our students and staff.”

Also speaking at the training was Angela Heinemann, a PE teacher at Travis Elementary who attended the Summit, and recently signed up to serve as a Health Coach.

“These resources will help us do our jobs even better,” Heinemann said. “The fact that our students helped create the “Change the Game” poster is very impressive, and hopefully will encourage our students to make healthier choices. I think the rewards and incentives for Health Coaches will add excitement as well.”

All participating Health Coaches who complete the recommended activities this spring will receive a special banner for their school, along with an opportunity to participate in drawings for a free massage and membership from the YMCA, Texans tickets, Kroger shopping sprees, and other prizes provided by area sponsors.
