HISD's Lanier Middle School Shines in Wellness

    Photo
Houston Texans Linebacker, DeMeco Ryans, visited Lanier Middle School to celebrate the many ways Lanier is supporting wellness.

Lanier Middle School is a shining example of how schools are promoting healthy eating and physical activity across HISD. At the 2009 Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools Summit, numerous strategies were developed for improving school wellness, many of which are being implemented at Lanier. For example, Cindy Roesler, Lanier's Physical Education department chair, is one of 70 new HISD Health Coaches. The school is participating in Step It Up, part of Change the Game, a student-led communications campaign, as well as Fuel Up to Play 60. Plus, about a dozen students earlier this year helped create a new supplemental P.E. curriculum. Click here to view video highlights of the recent celebration, and here to read a related story.

A panel of video professionals awarded the Herrera Elementary video a top score for its "creativity."

What does it take to get students excited about eating healthy and becoming more physically active? Just ask students at Herrera Elementary School who recently produced an award-winning entry in the Fuel Up to Play 60 video contest. The team of students will appear on KHOU's Great Day Houston and receive a behind the scenes tour of the studio. To honor the students' stellar work, Dairy MAX provided $1000 to Herrera's broadcast journalism program. Huffman Middle School also was recognized for its innovative "pep rally" wellness promotion, captured in this high-energy video.
