Students from Chavez High School recently toured HISD's Food Service Support Facility and while there, shared ideas for promoting healthy eating. This visit continues the trend toward engaging students in improving school wellness, an effort initiated at the Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools Summit.
One of the new ideas offered by students was that cafeterias could display signs that provide nutritional information for various foods. They also suggested that food services try to make the food look more appealing, and provide more vegetarian options and serve tuna.
Julie Spreckelmeyer, Director of Food Service Communications, met with the students and was impressed with their interest and ideas. "It was nice to have the kids here. They had a lot of good questions and a couple of ideas that they could help us with. We would be happy to work with them on the nutritional signage project if they decide to take it on," Spreckelmeyer said.
