The launch of the Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools initiative earlier this year has sparked a wave of action at HISD, particularly in the areas of increasing student voice in wellness and elevating visibility of health and wellness issues among school administrators, parents and students.
For example, HISD is establishing a Student School Health Advisory Council; highlighting health and wellness efforts on the district’s website at a whole new level; and engaging administrators, students and parents from across the district in discussions to elevate both the profile and impact of its health and wellness efforts. See the agenda for this summer’s Leadership Institute, where the "Making Wellness Happen" guide was distributed to principals and other school personnel to help implement the HISD's wellness policy across the district's nearly 300 schools.
Importantly, the Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools initiative is presenting HISD with new possibilities for partnering with business and industry, government, national and community leaders, and students — all in an effort to improve nutrition and physical activity opportunities for HISD students. See Prototype Projects for more information about the pilot initiative now underway.
