  Prototype Projects
Nearly 150 volunteers from across Houston and the country have joined hands in planning Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools prototype projects that will begin launching at HISD in the 2009-2010 school year. This new pilot will focus on improving nutrition and physical activity opportunities through a communications campaign, delivering new healthy food options to kids, working with business and retail to create a Healthy School Zone and attracting new partners and resources to support these efforts.

The pilot also will include other ideas brought forth at the Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools Summit that the Houston Independent School District is actively pursuing. These measures include increasing the student voice in wellness through a new student advisory council and elevating visibility of the issue among school administrators and parents on HISD’s website and upcoming conferences.

“The Healthy Kids, Healthy Schools initiative aims to accelerate the momentum for positive change at HISD,” said Alicia Moag-Stahlberg, MS, RD, Initiative Co-chair and Senior Consultant, National Dairy Council and Former and Founding Executive Director, Action for Healthy Kids. “Very talented and committed volunteers who represent the whole system of stakeholders are uniting to create improved nutrition and physical activity opportunities at HISD.”
